Wind Shear Analysis Window

Windographer's Wind Shear Analysis window lets you analyze the variation of both wind speed and direction with height above ground.

Wind Speed Shear in Windographer

You can choose to display the mean speed shear versus month, time of day, direction sector, and other data columns like wind speed or temperature. A list of checkboxes lets you choose the subset of wind speed sensors on which you want to base the shear calculations. You may wish to select only a subset of the available speed sensors to focus on a particular height range or boom orientation, or to exclude an inaccurate sensor or one with a low data recovery rate.

Windographer reports speed shear in terms of the power law exponent or the surface roughness. As is true almost everywhere in Windographer, you can choose to display the data in graphical or tabular format, and you can filter by flag, date, direction sector, wind speed, and other factors.

Wind Veer By Hour in Windographer

This window displays the mean direction shear (also called wind veer) in similar ways, versus month, time of day, direction sector, and other data columns. Windographer calculates the vector mean wind direction and the wind veer magnitude, in degrees per 100m, in each subdivision. You can base these veer calculations on all available direction sensors, or just a subset of them.

By default, when determining the mean wind speeds and vector mean wind directions for the purpose of calculating changes with height, Windographer considers only those time steps that contain data from all selected sensors. We call that the concurrency requirement. But a checkbox in this window lets you relax that constraint if you wish

Wind Shear Hodograph in Windographer

If you choose to display mean speed and direction data, Windographer displays a hodograph with one arrow for each direction sensor, where the azimuth of each arrow reflects the vector mean direction for that direction sensor, and the length of each arrow reflects the mean reported by the associated wind speed sensor.

Wind Shear Frequency in Windographer

In addition to these mean shear calculations, the Wind Shear Analysis window also calculates the shear and veer parameters in every time step of your data set, and lets you analyze the distribution of those values. If you choose to display the speed shear frequency, Windographer displays a frequency histogram graph showing how frequently the speed shear parameter falls within various bins. You can see that histogram in graphical or tabular format, as well as logarithmic graphs that highlight the upper and lower ends of the distribution.

Wind Veer Frequency in Windographer

If you choose to display the direction shear frequency, Windographer creates similar displays showing the distribution of wind veer magnitude values, allowing you to see the frequency of extreme wind veer events.
